Scouse Attack!

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

This weekend it’s the Liverpool derby, and with Liverpool scoring for fun, it’s possibly the only time this season Everton wouldn’t want to play their neighbours. Although Everton have been on a decent run of form of late, Liverpool have scored 15 goals in their last 3 games, conceding a solitary 2 goals in the process. My Prediction: 3-1 Liverpool (Sorry Matt).

Onto the rest of this weeks predictions:

Aston Villa vs Fulham: After Fulhams elation at beating their neighbours Chelsea last weekend, their first in over 40 years, they will be hoping they can win their first away match of the season at Villa Park. This is an important game for both teams as it would put a big gap between themselves and the relegation zone. My Prediction: 2-1 Villa.

Chelsea vs Man City: With Man Utd hot on Chelsea’s heel in the race for the title, Chelsea need to buck their ideas up, and this is a good chance to do so, with a Man City side that struggles away from home. City will be disappointed at losing out in the FA Cup on Monday to West Ham, and now they only have a feint hope of a european league spot. My Prediction: 2-1 Chelsea.

Sunderland vs Blackburn: Sunderland have been poor all season, and with Blackburn in the hunt for a Champions League spot, they will really struggle here. Other than that, this will probably be a very dull match. My Prediction: 2-0 Blackburn

Wigan vs West Ham: If ever there was a mid-table match, this would be it, with both teams just outside of the UEFA cup slots. West Ham still have their FA Cup concerns, but Wigan are free to concentrate on the league, and I think this might prove crucial. My Prediction: 3-1 Wigan.

Portsmouth vs Arsenal: A resurgent Portsmouth team will really be put to the test here, with Arsenal also on a charge up the league table. Arsenal are still chasing after the 4th spot in the league, and this is really a must win games for both teams, with pompey still struggling in the relegation zone. My Prediction: 2-1 Arsenal.

Charlton vs Newcastle: After Newcastle’s sudden improvement after Souness’s departure, in recent weeks they have been brought rapidly back to earth, with defeats against Man Utd and Liverpool in the league, and Chelsea in a very dirty FA Cup quarter final. Charlton have had a poor season all round, and with both teams level on points, this is a crucial game for both teams. My Prediction: 1-1 draw.

Man Utd vs Birmingham: When you lose 7-0 in the FA Cup, one of the last teams you want to face are another team on a run of form, and in facing Man Utd, who are top of the form table, Birmingham couldn’t have chosen a worser opposition. Birmingham have looked very poor recently, and they are, in my opinion, pretty much destined for the drop. My Prediction: 3-0 Man Utd.

Tottenham vs West Brom: As the season reaches it’s climax, all games for these teams become crucial. Spurs have only lost once at home all season, and that was to Chelsea, & West Brom have only a solitary away win, so this will be a tough tie for the midlanders. My Prediction: 2-1 Spurs.

Update: Whoops I’ve forgotten to do a prediction for Boro vs Bolton, oh well, too late now :)

The start of a hectic week (cont…)

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

Before the rest of todays games kick off, I shall do some quick predictions for them:

Arsenal vs Charlton: In recent games Arsenal have looked rejuvenated, and I can’t see Charlton having any chance of a result here, especially with their FA Cup tie in midweek. My Prediction: 3-0 Arsenal.

Blackburn vs Middlesbrough: If Blackburn are after the 4th Champions league spot, then this is the sort of match that they need to win. ‘Boro have been on good form recently, and having reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup midweek, and with a FA Cup match at Charlton this week, may not put 100% of their effort in here. My Prediction: 2-1 Blackburn.

Bolton vs Sunderland: Having lost to West Ham in the FA Cup on wednesday, Bolton can now concentrate solely on their league position, and trying to return to europe next season. Sunderland have looked poor all season, and even with their managerial shuffling, I cannot see their situation improving. My Prediction: 2-0 Bolton.

Man City vs Wigan: With Man City still in the FA Cup, their priorities may be elsewhere here, as their next match is just over 48hours away. Wigan can still sneak into the european positions, which would be outstanding for their first season in the top flight. My Prediction: 2-1 Wigan.

WBA vs Man Utd: Man Utd are the premierships inform team currently, having taken 15 points from their last 6 games, and I cannot see a struggling WBA side really getting in their way of 3 more points here. My Prediction: 3-1 Man Utd.

West Ham vs Portsmouth: Portsmouth’s late win last weekend will have given them some hope of safety, and against West Ham, who still have a chance of silverware this season, they have a good chance for 3 more points. However they have struggled away from home, and West Ham also have a chance of a european spot in the league. My Prediction: 1-1.

Birmingham vs Spurs: Birmingham will be missing some key midfielders here with David Dunn, Jiri Jarosik, Muzzy Izzet and Julian Gray all missing, and Jermaine Pennant struggling. Spurs are on a poor run of form currently, and will be hoping that they can improve that here. My Prediction: 2-1 Spurs.

Fulham vs Chelsea: Fulham are really struggling at the moment, so a visit from their near neighbours is possibly the worst thing they want. Chelsea may have been struggling recently, but I don’t think Fulham have much of a chance here. My Prediction: 3-0 Chelsea.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Both teams are involved in FA Cup ties this week, and especially in Newcastles case, I think they may rest key players. Liverpool had a resounding victory in midweek, and with their strikers sundenly discovering where the goal is, they will be hoping to continue the goal scoring here. My Prediction: 2-2.

The start of a hectic week.

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

This weekend is the start of a hectic week of football, with the FA Cup quarter finals taking place from Monday to Thursday, and luckily for me there is only one early kick off on Saturday.

Everton vs Aston Villa: After losing to Man City in the FA Cup Villa will be trying to improve their league position here, however they are facing a chronic lack of strikers, with Baros out, and Phillips & Angel doubtful. Both teams are currently enduring topsy-turvy form, but I think that Everton’s home advantage, and Villa’s injury problems will be crucial. My Prediction: 2-1 Everton.

More predictions later today, I’m too tired/drunk/hungry, damn you St. Patrick!

More Prem Predictions (Cont.)

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

Continuing on from yesterdays post, here are the rest of this weekends premiership predictions:

Bolton vs West Ham: West Ham are still the premierships in-form team, however Alan Pardew has just won the Manager of the Month award, so the so-called “curse” might affect them now. This is the first meeting of these teams this week, with their FA Cup replay scheduled for Wednesday night, so it will be interesting to see which match has priority for the managers. I think Bolton will be more interested in league position, and this will probably tell in the final score. My Prediction: 2-1 Bolton.

Everton vs Fulham: A win for Everton and they reach the mythical 40 point mark, whilst Fulham should still be worried about what is happening below them, especially if Birmingham beat WBA. Everton are riding high in the form table currently, whilst Fulham are very near the bottom, and Fulham have only picked up 3 points away from home all season, with no wins, three draws and eleven defeats, this is pretty much a home banker for Everton. My Prediction: 2-0 Everton.

Portsmouth vs Man City: Harry Redknapp’s arrival at Fratton Park has done little to improve the performances of Pompey, who look destined for the drop now. Man City have had a very topsy turvy season this year, and they have very poor away form, however I don’t see Portsmouth being any trouble today. My Prediction: 3-1 Man City.

Sunderland vs Wigan: Wigan have been struggling lately, and Pascal Chimbonda’s own goal on monday night will have done little to improve things. With Mick McCarthy leaving Sunderland in the week, the Sunderland players will have some added impotus to perform better, and this is just the match for them to show an improvement. My Prediction: 2-1 Sunderland.

Blackburn vs Aston Villa: After losing out to what most Blackburn fans would term a 12-man Spurs side on Sunday, Blackburn will be hoping to put their European ambitions back on track with a home win against Villa. Villa however have better away form than home form, and with the what could have been a relegation fight for them, they’ve recently put together a decent run of form. My Prediction: 1-1 Draw.

Arsenal vs Liverpool: This is the big game this weekend, and after reaching the quarter finals of the Champions League, Arsenal will be hoping to try and improve their league standing and catch up on North London rivals Spurs. Having only met last month at Anfield, with Liverpool scraping a win, Arsenal have a good chance of winning this, especially with Liverpools goal-scoring problems. My Prediction: 2-0 Arsenal.

Charlton vs Middlesbrough: Middlesbrough, having beaten on-form Roma in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, will be hoping to leapfrog Charlton here, and they have a good chance, with Charlton struggling and boro improving constantly. My Prediction: 2-1 Boro.

Man Utd vs Newcastle: Both of these teams have been playing well lately, and with Newcastle only 4 points off the UEFA Cup spots, Freddy Shepherd’s hopes for 6th place could still happen. Ruud van Nistelrooy could return to Man Utd’s starting XI, which could prove important. My Prediction: 3-1 Man Utd.

More Prem Predictions

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Only got chance to cover the early prem matches now, I will try and cover the other games tomorrow.

Birmingham vs West Brom: Another important game for Birmingham this week, both in terms of league position, and due to the fact it is a local derby. A win for Birmingham takes them out of the relegation zone, and dumps WBA into it. Both teams have had mixed form of late, but Birmingham have some injury problems in defence which I think could prove costly. My Prediction: 2-1 WBA

Chelsea vs Tottenham: Chelsea are currently on their worst run of form under Mourinho, and this could be another tough test, however Tottenham have also been having a tough time lately, and are still prone to defensive lapses. Luckily for spurs, Robben is suspended and Lampard is still not 100% with his hamstring problem. Another thing to note is that Chelsea have relaid their “pitch” at last, so instead of resembling a mudbath, it now is nice and new, this will aid both teams style of play, so it should be an entertaining match. My Prediction: 3-1 Chelsea

Premiership Review

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

I’ve not updated my prediction stats for a while now, so I shall do a quick update now.

Weekend of 25th February
There was a reduced fixture list on this weekend, and I managed to only corretcly predict 50% of the results, and none of the scores. Yet again I predicted an Arsenal match incorrectly, and I got the Liverpool match wrong by quite a way too, I think I am too cynical on the reds lack of strikers.

In the Carling cup final, I predicted the result correctly, but did not forsee it being as one sided as reality, I don’t think many people would have predicted a 4-0 thrashing.

Weekend of 4th March
I did exceptionally well this weekend, correctly predicting 70% of the results, however it was another blank week for correct score-line predictions. Another week of incorrect Arsenal and Liverpool predictions, and I don’t think many people would have foreseen Newcastles demolishion of Bolton. The final prediction, that of Man United’s win over Wigan came very late, all thanks to a bizarre own goal by Pascal Chimbonda, which was virtually the last kick of the game.

Current Overall Prediction percentage: 54% (28/52 correct)
Current Score Predictions percentage: 5% (2/40 correct)

Prem Predictions #8

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

Looking at this weekends fixtures, there are no matches that really stand out as being big games, although with the race for the european spots hotting up, especially after Man United won the League Cup, which made 6th a UEFA Cup spot. Here are this weeks predictions:

Aston Villa vs Portsmouth: Portsmouth haven’t won a league game this calendar year, picking up only 1 point since the turn of the year, and I cannot see them improving this record away to Villa, although Villa are struggling in the lower half of the table. My Prediction: 2-1 Villa.

Fulham vs Arsenal: Another away match for Arsenal, and with them still missing Cole, it’ll probably be another non-english XI. Arsenals league form is only better than the Premiership’s bottom two, they’ve been unable to produce their champions league form at home, perhaps the players feel more at home in europe :) Fulham are on a good run of home form, winning their last 4 home games, but I think this game will be end that run. My Prediction: 1-1.

Liverpool vs Charlton: Another home game for Liverpool, and with the england match having being played at a Anfield as well, the pitch will have taken quite a pounding in recent weeks. A win for Liverpool and they will be in 2nd spot in the league for at least 48 hours, with Man Utd not playing till weds. Charlton, like Villa, are struggling in the bottom half of the league, and I can’t see their situation improving here. My Prediction: 2-0 Liverpool.

Middlesbrough vs Birmingham: An important game for both sides, a boro win virtually guarantees them safety, and turns the relegation battle into a 3 from 4 situation, and if Birmingham win, and West Brom lose, then Birmingham are out of the relegation zone. My Prediction: 2-1 ‘boro.

Newcaslte vs Bolton: Alan Shearer may return to the Newcastle squad for this match, but Newcastle still are without Keiron Dyer, and somewhat less importantly, Titus Bramble. Both teams are on a good run of form, and I can see a stalemate on the cards. My Prediction: 2-2.

West Brom vs Chelsea: Frank Lampard misses another premiership match, which may dampen Chelsea’s attacking powers, however against a struggling West Brom side, I cannot see the loss of Lampard really stopping a Chelsea win. My Prediction: 3-0 Chelsea.

West Ham vs Everton: Both teams have had excellent runs of form lately, West Ham are top of the form chart currently, and Everton were on a 7 game unbeaten streak until facing Newcastle last weekend. I think this will probably be a tight encounter. My Prediction: 1-1.

Man City vs Sunderland: Another tough match for Sunderland, and although Man City have fallen away from the european spots of late, they still will provide tough opposition for the black cats. Man City are without Joey Barton, so they may struggle slightly, but probably not much. My Prediction: 2-0 City.

Tottenham vs Blackburn: Another outing on sky for spurs, and with Blackburn hot on their heels for the Champions League spot, and important match for both teams. Spurs have had indifferent form of late, whereas Blackburn have charged up the league table. My Prediction: 2-1 Spurs.

Wigan vs Man United: Wigan will be hoping to avenge their thrashing in the League Cup final last weekend, and their thrashing at Old Trafford earlier in the league (both games were 4-0 wins for United). Van Nistelrooy is unlikely to play again this week (apologies for last weeks prediction) with a stomach complaint, so another runout for Saha, who will be hoping ton continue his run of form (although his cup final goal was hardly a classic). My Prediction: 3-1 Man Utd.
